Remember The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? There is a scene in the film where one of the main characters, a fairly famous dancer, gets hit by a car and is no longer able to dance. The scene shows all of these details that happened leading up to the accident and suggests, and rightly so, that had any of the “small” events leading up to the accident not happened then this girl would most likely still be dancing. That got me to really think about blessings and curses. Our brains and perspectives are so small that we can only comprehend causality a few if not just one or two events removed from an occurrence we call a blessing or a curse.
Think about it, there was undoubtedly someone who went in for a job interview on September 10th, 2001 and received a job in one of the Twin Towers. Maybe this person prayed to get this job and when they got the job they thanked God for providing the job for them. The same day someone may have been driving into work and got a flat tire. Maybe this person too had a job interview, but because of the nail in his tire he was unable to make it. This person begins to curse and accuse God of never getting a “break” in life. Which of these was truly blessed?
I said all that to say what we deem as a blessing or curse may not always be accurate. Be careful. Be thankful. Know that that “thing” you may presently call a curse could be a hidden blessing from God. Maybe one day we’ll know, but until then maybe we shouldn’t complain so much.
