First dates were rough. Thank God I'm married and don't have to go on first dates anymore.
Check out my other posts. One of my favorite movies is “Rocky Balboa.” Ah, yes, good ole Rocky, the unknown boxer, elevated out of the ash heap of ambiguity to international fame, now finds himself a widower of some sixty something years rehashing the life of his love and the passionless state of his present. Watch the movie, I don’t feel like summarizing. Anyway, there is a moment in the movie where Rock explains to his brother-in-law Paulie that he still has some “stuff” in the basement. If you’re a guy, you undoubtedly understand the stuff in the basement. It is that thing or things which inspire and incite the passion within whilst discouraging at the same time. The hope of the manifestation of these things incites yet the doubt and fear of its death discourages.
Another one of my favorites is ”No Country For Old Men.” The recurring theme throughout is one of fate and destiny. The sociopathic villain flips a coin to determine the fate of his potential victims. He explains to one convenience store clerk, as he coldly flips the coin, that everything the man has done up until now has led to this moment in time…this moment of destiny. In fact, if everything he had done up until the point of this coin flip led him to this moment, what was the point of life? Ok, I know these are just movies, but they got me to thinking. Death is quickly approaching all of us. Thinking less about death does not cause us to approach it any slower. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that we ought to think so much about death, quite the contrary. Every day is a gift. Too many die with “stuff still in the basement.” Too many spend today worrying about yesterday, when today is a gift forged by the experiences, be they mistakes or not, of yesterday and the day before, and the day before. Anyone can buy an expensive car, or house or whatever, but your experiences…those are what make you the priceless gift to the world that you are. The best gift you can give yourself tomorrow is to live today to the fullest. If you spend today worrying about yesterday then you have just wasted another day that you will loathe and regret tomorrow. Rid your basement of the stuff today. Fear of future failure robs tomorrow of the gift of experiences. If a dream is in your heart you must go after it, not just for yourself, but for God and those around you who will benefit. Your dreams are not for you...they are for others. (Check out these cool vintage pics of Rocky) Check out my other posts. |
